Thrive, by Arianna Huffington

Arianna Huffington The tipping point for Arianna Huffington came when she found herself bleeding on her kitchen floor. She realized that the couldn’t go on living the way she had. So she decided to make some profound changes. It’s the account of those changes you see on her latest book “Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Happier Life “.

Huffington is the founder of the media group Huffington Post, present in several countries.

She tells us of a third metric for success, that should go along with the traditional money and power.

One of the mistakes that let to her collapse was her lack of sleep. She was constantly tired, so she decided to gradually add a couple of hours of sleep a night. And the results came soon after.

Another decision she focuses on the book was turning her attention to herself, namely meditating and exercising. A daily meditation session is a great way of relaxing and re-centering, even if only for a few minutes. It takes practice and patience, but the results come. Exercise is also a great improvement to your well-being and health, that goes without saying.

Another important part of the book is about Giving. The author tells of some projects she has done at the Huffington Post, and also how she gets her employees involved in them.

This is a very personal book. Huffington stresses the great importance her mother had on her life, and how she learned invaluable lessons from her.

I found this an important read for anyone in business. We must strike a balance between work and our well-being. If we don’t, we risk inevitable burnout and serious health issues. The better you take care of yourself, the better your work will be.
